BasaltNotes
A self-hosted note-taking app in the spirit of Obsidian, with wiki links, backlinks and full-text search – plus an AI curator that files new content for you.

The files are the source of truth
Every vault is a plain folder of Markdown files with git history. You can open it in Obsidian at the same time, edit it over SMB or simply back it up. Every change is a commit and can be undone.
The optional AI curator reads new content such as session recaps or uploaded documents. It creates NPCs, places and quests, extends existing notes and learns spelling variants as aliases. Nothing is overwritten silently: bigger changes arrive as a proposal with a diff.
Features
Notes & types
Markdown with properties, templates and folders – for your campaign as well as journal, recipes and tasks.
Linked
Backlinks with context, renaming updates all links, graph view, quick switcher.
Search & queries
Full-text search with filters and Dataview-like queries.
Ask your notes
A chat that pre-selects matching notes without the LLM, so it works well with small local models.
Plugins
Extensions with a server and a UI part; Calendar & CalDAV for phones and Home Assistant ships built in.
Open to other apps
REST API with OpenAPI, webhooks, server-sent events, iframe embeds and a JS SDK.
Working together
BasaltNotes is the memory: WhisperNotes delivers recaps to the inbox, Tabletop Forge reads characters and lore, and the OllamaProxy provides the model for curator and chat.
Quick start
git clone https://github.com/Poldion/BasaltNotes.git && cd BasaltNotes
# adjust docker-compose.yml (vault path, ADMIN_PASSWORD, LLM_URL)
docker compose up -dThen open http://<host>:4400 and sign in as admin. The first start offers to create an example vault. The image poldion/basaltnotes also runs on TrueNAS SCALE.
